The Gathering follows people from the moment they wake, going through rituals and regimes of quiet solitude in preparation for an encounter with a public vibrancy of people. As rivers run to stream to river to sea, these films lovingly and intimately observe how people gather together and become stronger together. From a barefooted old man scaling an Irish Mountain, to a young Muslim girl attending a march, to a Northern Soul boy on the early train to a late night in London and finally the last in the series sees ex Underground shift worker gathering and placing his own style of sea defences on a remote beach in Norfolk.
The films represent the first purely for television work of director Colin O’Toole, previously know for being a music video director for Ian Brown and making corporate films for Nissan and Adidas. These films present a winning and welcome departure for a future documentary director worth watching.
