Following on from Pulse’s success with the BBC commissioned series ‘Citizen Smith’ and ‘Johnny Congo’ for C4 First Cuts, the television department at Pulse has expanded.

Emerging Executive Simon Breen (Chancers, Beginner’s Guides and Citizen Smith) is now joined on a part time basis by Lilla Hurst, Five’s branding and co-production guru, Lilla is actively pursuing co-pro, distribution and sponsorship possibilities across the development slate. Faber and Faber’s Michael Smith steps out of the literary world that saw him publish the much acclaimed Giro Playboy last year and takes on the guise of a contemporary Citizen Smith scouring the four corners of England in search of a modern day definition of nationality.

Michael writes; ‘I am unfashionably patriotic; I love England, and I’ve always felt very proud to be English; for me England is not just a place, or a disappointing football team, or a war against the Gerries; its not the knee jerk reactions of Daily Mail readers, Little England’s fear of Johnny Foreigner, or sentimental nostalgia for steep streets off Hovis adverts; England is an altogether higher and more progressive ideal, the promise of a fairer and better way of life, and the nobility and romance of the English dream swells my heart with ridiculous pride… the problem is, whenever I try to untangle what being English actually means, it tends to unravel and disappear before my eyes’.

David Tucker’s Channel 4/More 4 documentary Johnny Congo was aired as part of the First Cuts season on the night of January 3rd 2008. It is set to  air in prime time on More 4 at a later date.

71year old Johnny Murphy spent 40 years fighting as a mercenary in the Congolese Jungle but is now losing his battle against boredom and booze in a suburban retirement home in Surrey. This highly original and genre busting film weaves stylized animation into observational footage to express how Johnny’s colourful and troubled past creeps ever more hauntingly into his present.
